Our History
In 1982, a task force formed by the York County
Council of Churches and the Salvation Army created the groundwork for
the York County Food Bank. The first members whom served on the
Advisory Board were: Fred Fisher, Floyd Meisenhelter, Joe McCormick,
Stanley Kohr, Jay Miller, Wilson Wilhide, Rev. Robert Ketcham and
Captain Norman Woods. Still working very closely with the Salvation
Army the food bank was housed in the basement of the Hoffman Building
with 2,000 combined square feet of storage and distribution space.
In the first year of operation over 485,000
pounds of food items were distributed to 13 members agencies. The
Food Bank remained at this location from 1982-1987 and during that
time over 3.5 million pounds of food items were distributed to the
growing number of member agencies. The remarkable growth that
occurred led to the decision by the Board of Directors to seek out
expanded facilities elsewhere.
In the early part of the 1987, The York County
Food Bank in cooperation with Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen purchased
the old Fisher Meat Market building at 331 South George Street. This
new expansion increased storage and distribution space to 7-8,000
square feet. With the increase in space we were also able to expand
membership to over 200 agencies representing all forms of help such
as; soup kitchens, food pantries, day care centers and other centers
that support the needy in York County.
We remained at that location until the end of
1995 when the York County Food Bank purchased our present location at
254 West Princess Street, York. It wasn't until April 1996, that Food
Bank proceeded with operations at this site. Our expansion has
progressed to the point now, where we support over 300 agencies and
in 1999, we distributed over 3 million pounds of food and household items.
Our Dedication
The Food Bank has been under the direction of Fred Fisher since it
opened in 1982. Four other full time employees' and dozen's of
volunteers are dedicated to feeding the needy that reside in York County.
Our Mission
"Eliminate Hunger in York County"
As stated above, the food bank collects and distributes over 3
million pounds of food annually to more then 300 York County food
pantry's and distributing agencies. We will strive to meet the goal
of eliminating hunger in York County by promoting the needs of our
community. We will also seek sponsors who share our vision and our
willing to donate resources such as time, money and food items. The
continued support that we have experienced from our very conception
will provide for our member agencies with the resources needed to
fulfill the goals set forth by their programs.
