York County Food Bank is putting 48,480 pounds of food and 19,630 pounds of personal care and household items each month into the hands of 1,600 families with children this summer as part of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program.
Administered by the PA Department of Public Welfare, and part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the TANF program will run through the end of September so that eligible families receive four distributions of food and household items.
Deb Eichelberger, York County Food Bank Assistant Director says, “If additional funds become available, then the program could extend through the end of the year.”
By providing food and household items for low-income families, the TANF program frees up money for other necessary purchases and bills and it provides income for temporary workers who have been hired to augment the efforts of York County Food Bank staff and volunteers.
