"You wouldn't believe the energy in that room!" said Food Bank Assistant Director Deb Eichelberger. "Those kids were really excited." Eichelberger addressed a room of teenagers and their adult sponsors on Friday evening to thank them for remembering the hungry people living in York County.
The York Association of the United Church of Christ sponsored four hundred teens from across the US who visited the county last week to make minor repairs to houses owned by seniors and disabled people. After working in the heat and sun all week to build, paint, and weather-proof, the young people gathered at the new (and air-conditioned!) Spring Grove Area High School gymnasium to celebrate completing their work, and to form a human chain to load 2,745 pounds of much-needed food items into Eichelberger's truck for delivery to the Food Bank. That donated food will be sorted on Monday and Tuesday morning and made available to pantries, kitchens, shelters, and social service agencies throughout York County.
"It just felt good to see all of those teens and feel their positive energy," added Eichelberger. "That food is needed in all parts of our county. So many people will benefit from their hard work."
