They are our support system. They are a testament to our past, and a glimpse of our future. They are our senior citizens, our parents and grandparents, our friends and neighbors. Right now, they are in trouble. As of 2007, 11.2% of all senior citizens in America are food insecure. That is an overwhelming 6 million people, and the numbers are rising. As soaring gas and food prices wreak havoc on savings accounts, a crestfallen economy destroys what little security many of our local seniors have left. Unable to live on Social Security alone, options are limited for the aging members of our community.
The good news is there is assistance available. The York County Food Bank, your community food bank, engages in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CFSP.) Each month we are able to pack 696 CSFP boxes for local senior citizens. We acknowledge that there are still a large number of seniors in our community who still need assistance.
The York County Food Bank is looking to add to the waiting list of people looking to receive CFSP boxes. By building the waiting list we hope to be able to increase the number of boxes we are able to provide the community with each month. If you are over 60 and need assistance, or know someone who is, please contact the York County Food Bank at 717-846-6435 ext 101 for more information. Let’s protect our community’s greatest resource, our seniors.
