Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Holding Our Heads High

By Jeremy Swiger

In July 2009, sixty-one people gathered on Chestnut Street in York City. As Robert Brunner gazed at the smoldering remains of the neighborhood, he was confronted by a striking question from his granddaughter; what was he going to do to help. As a packaging specialist at Graham Packaging, he works long hours but still wanted to help. In an interview with the York Dispatch he stated, "I didn't want to let down my granddaughter." Once he got the ball rolling there was certainly no need to fear disappointment. Working together with local businesses and community members to help in any way they could. Donations were collected and a family giveaway was held. Each family could pick one large item, one small item, as well as food, and cleaning supplies. Every child received a toy. Doctors came in offering free health screenings and dental exams. Everyone donated what they could, whether it be items to be given away, money, or services. Each family signed up upon entering and after picking up their items were given vouchers for services like hair cuts to be used on another day. Thus began the non profit Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

Fast forward two years to July 23rd 2011. The Neighbors Helping Neighbors giveaway was in full swing. Held in two seperate locations near the site of the original Chestnut Street disaster, Robert Brunner's cause came together for the second year of it's annual giveaway event. The rules stayed the same. Families signed up upon entering and were provided with a large item, a small item, food, cleaning supplies, and last but certainly not least, a toy for every child. Items were distributed through the Helen Thackston Middle School. Through out the school positive reinforced messages are painted on doors and entry ways. These statements greet those in need who have come to pick up necessities, everything from air conditioners to small appliances, all free to a family who needs them. Literature about anger management, alcoholism, and preventing self harm was also available.

From a few blocks away you can hear a heavy bass, marching out a beat. Along with the giveaway, there were t-shirts and food for sale, as well as a bounce house for the kids, and a public concert. Even from two streets away you can hear the lyrics of the three person rap/hip-hop group who was entertaining the crowd. Offering positive messages to all within ear shot, the group performed songs like "Keep Your Head Up," a touching reminder to anyone who has hit hard times that there are better times ahead.

The York County Food Bank and it's distribution partners are proud supporters of this annual event. We would like to thank everyone who donated or volunteered at the event.
