Anya Grunewald, left, and Laurie Qiao show off the money they raised for charity going door-to-door in their York Township neighborhood during last month's heavy snow storm. (submitted)
During December's big snow storm, Anya Grunewald and Laurie Qiao were thinking about what to do.

They had gone out to play in the snow, but that got old. So they came up with the idea of raising money for charity.

"I wanted to help out a charity," Anya said.

So on that snowy Saturday, Anya and Laurie, both 10-year-old fifth-graders at Ore Valley Elementary School, went door-to-door in their Heritage Hills neighborhood in York Township to raise money for the York County Food Bank.

"They thought about shoveling snow, but that would have been way too hard for them," Anya's mother, Jada Grunewald, said. "It was a lot of snow, and they're small."

They decided on the food bank after the mother mentioned it, among other charitable organizations. Checking out the food bank's Web site, the girls liked the 2010 marketing motto: "Stick it to hunger."

"They saw 'Stick it to hunger' and they said, 'Yeah, stick it to hunger'," Jada Grunewald said.

The girls canvassed their neighborhood, setting a goal of raising $30. They worked for about two or three hours, taking a couple of breaks to return to Anya's house for hot chocolate and to warm up.

At the end of the day, they had collected $101.

"Because of the snow, everybody was home," Jada Grunewald said.

Later, the girls wrote thank you notes to all who contributed.
