Red Lion Area Community Services volunteer appreciation

Celebrate...acknowledge...recognize

By Hollie Walkley

Red Lion Area Community Services (RDACS) Executive Director Muriel Slenker greeted board members, friends, and staff of area elected officials at the agency’s Volunteer Appreciation luncheon on April 27.  After a tour of the food pantry space, Slenker invited everyone downstairs to lunch, which included sandwiches, soup provided by Nancy and John Hedrick, and German chocolate and lemon cakes baked by RLACS’ volunteers.

Pastor David Tietje, RLACS Board President and Pastor St. John’s United Church of Christ, Red Lion provided the blessing and welcomed everyone explaining that he views his Board membership “not as an honorary title but as an honor to serve.”

Red Lion Area Community Services’ mission is “A local cooperative ministry of compassion to the disadvantaged,” and Pastor Tietje said that his congregation is “very proud to be part of this ministry.”

After lunch, guests returned to the first floor meeting area to celebrate RLACS’ volunteers.  Bob Reilly (representing Rep. Todd Platts) congratulated Slenker and the volunteers on their dedication and selfless commitment to the community.  Volunteers received certificates of appreciation from RLACS, Sen. Mike Waugh’s office, and Rep. Stan Saylor’s office, and small gifts.

Slenker remembered Pastor Glenn Deitrich, Grace United Methodist, Windsor, who was very supportive of the ministry of the Red Lion Area Community Services. He was instrumental in establishing the Kid’s Kafe program, and he and his wife, Shirley, were frequent RLACS volunteers.

PA State Senator Mike Waugh was represented by Lisa Miller, and Steve Pugh represented PA State Representative Stan Saylor. RLACS Board Members in attendance included Colleen Gemmill, VP and Community Representative, and Julie Landis, Member. Terri Rentzel, Instructor Penn State Cooperative Extension attended, as well as 30 volunteers. For photos visit:
