St. John Chrysostom drive yields 720 pounds of food

Yearly event benefits York County Food Bank

By Hollie Walkley

"Our congregation collects food every Lenten season," explained Marie Reba as she and her daughter Rachel unloaded items from the family van. They are members of St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Church in York, and this year they and other members of St. John Chrysostom's congregation collected 720 pounds of food to help feed hungry people in York County.

A quick check of the Internet yields much information about St. John Chrysostom (347 AD - 407 AD) who is known for his eloquent sermons. Many  included criticism of the rich for not sharing their wealth, and encouraged practices of justice and charity. We are thankful to the congregation of St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Church in York for their charity and for sharing with their hungry neighbors.

Let us relieve the poverty of those that beg of us and let us not be over-exact about it. St. John Chrysostom
