Well, another January has come and past, and with it the celebrated wonderland that was the basement of York residents Jack and Linda Getty is closed for another season.

You remember Jack and Linda Getty, don't you? They were kind enough to open their doors to the public for people to come and play with their enormous train set. Creating this annual event was important to the Gettys, believing there to be precious few affordable things for families to do in the York area. It wasn't until recent years that any admission was charged to play in this locomotive wonderland. What did they charge for admission? Their only request was for a donation to the food bank, whether it be monetary or a non-perishable food item. The families showed up in numbers, and so did the donations. Many families brought a case of goods instead of an individual product, feeling more willing to pay admission knowing that it was going to a good cause.

Sad you missed it. Don't worry, the Getty's are already making plans to not only continue the annual event, but make it a little bit better each year. We appreciate all their hard work, and thank everyone who donated. Together, they were able to collect 600 pounds of food and $400. We're already looking forward to what new things will be included in the train set for next year. Mark your calendars for it now, time blocks fill up fast, and often starts in the middle of December.
