Recently there has been the question: How do the York County Food Bank and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank relate to each other?
At one time, the York County Food Bank worked hand in hand with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Although two separate entities, the two organizations did work to gather donations within York County and more importantly to provide food for those in need in York County. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has similar working relationships in many of their other counties they are responsible for serving per their agreement with Feeding America and national organization.
In the latter part of 2009 the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank denied a request for the York County Food Bank to have a direct line with Feeding America, opting instead to terminate the contract that we had entered into to jointly to support York County. The conclusion of our ties to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank was due largely to a difference in policy and priorities. Many wondered if the termination of a contract that had been in place for ten years would lead to a decline in services within York County. The York County Food Bank was able to prove that this was far from being true, distributing over 3 million pounds of food and basic necessities in 2009, a feat that had not been duplicated since 1999.

The York County Food Bank continues to operate as a stand-alone food bank. All donations accepted by the York County Food Bank goes toward helping those in need within York County. We have increased our services, working together with our community and our distribution partners to feed those in need throughout our county in the most effective and efficient manner possible. An increase in volunteers and the efforts of our hard working staff have made it possible for us to increase our number of senior assistance boxes we distribute to 696 per month. We have even been able to lower our State Food Purchase costs to less than half of the state average, while still using the funding for its intended purpose, to purchase food to be given to those in need within our county.

We would like to thank everyone who continue to help us reach our goal of ending hunger within York County. We appreciate everyone who has made donations, whether it be food, money, or of precious time. We look forward to continue to work within our community to make a difference.
