YWCY

Chartered in 1941 as a nonprofit civic organization, the Young Women’s Club of York has played an important role through decades of social service and financial contributions to the York community.  The Club began with just 35 women who wanted to form a women’s community service group.  The original purpose of the Club was “to promote educational and cultural interests, to further civic improvements, and to engage in philanthropic activities.”  This is still the mission of the Young Women’s Club.

Over the years, YWC fundraising activities have directly aided dozens of York County nonprofit agencies.   We are known for producing several of York County’s popular Decorator Show Houses.  Being our most visible fundraising project throughout the years, the Club owned and operated the Hospitality Shop at the York Hospital for 63 years.  Using YWC funds, the Shop opened for business in 1947 to benefit the community through its contribution to York Hospital.  The long history of Young Women’s Club financial contributions to York Hospital spanned more than six decades and totaled more than $2 million dollars.

In 2010, York Hospital/WellSpan dissolved our relationship and took over the Hospitality Shop, leaving more than 90% of active Club members available to shift our volunteer efforts to other deserving nonprofits including the York County Food Bank.  Since the fall of 2011, 27 of our members have helped to pack senior meals at the Food Bank.  Typically, ten or more of our group volunteer each month.  By participating in such hands-on social service projects, our members derive personal satisfaction as we continue to fulfill our commitment to give back to the community.

Young Women’s Club membership is open to all York County women 21 and older.  If you would like to volunteer and perform community service, share your skills, and make new friends, the YWC welcomes you.  The Club holds monthly meetings the first Monday of most months.  We provide a variety of educational speakers and programs of interest to women of all ages.  Special groups also meet throughout the Club year reflecting particular interests of our members including cooking and photography.  Prospective members are always welcome.  Visit us at www.yorkyoungwomensclub.com.
